Apparently seeking to act as your movie kiosk in the cloud, Redbox on Thursday launched Redbox Instant by Verizon, aiming to compete against other streaming movie services like Netflix, Amazon prime, Hulu and others. For $8 a month a subscriber will be able t check out four DVDs ($9 a month for Blu-ray Discs) at Redbox kiosks and stream an unlimited number of movies and TV show from Warner Bros, Lionsgate, MGM and Paramount. Currently some 4,600 titles are available for streaming, far fewer than those available via Redbox's competitors. But while Netflix has evolved into a TV-heavy service, Redbox says that it is focusing on movies, thereby narrowing the competition between them and allowing for the possibility that some people may decide to subscribe to both. Asked whether Redbox has any plans to produce its own shows, as Netflix is now doing, Redbox Instant CEO Shawn Strickland said that such talk is really premature. However, he acknowledged, From an industry perspective, there is a clear force in that direction.
