Red Dwarf To Return For Two-part Special

by | 27 January 2009

After ten years in the wilderness, cult sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf will be resurrected for a two-part special this Easter, it has been announced.

Original cast members Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn are being reunited for the miniseries – subtitled Back to Earth – for Freeview channel Dave.

As the title suggests, after eight series of trying to return home, the universe's last surviving human Lister (Charles) finally gets his wish in the completely new episodes, which have been written by Doug Naylor but not his co-creator Rob Grant.

The episodes, due to be screened on Friday April 10th, will be the first time new Red Dwarf material has been seen on TV since the eighth series ended in 1999.

The comedy series set three million years in the future and in deep space won the international Emmy and attracted eight million viewers at its peak after starting on BBC2 in 1988.

In the show, lager-quaffing, vindaloo-loving, technician Lister, who works on board the eponymous Red Dwarf mining ship, is cryogenically frozen for three million years to discover he is the last human left alive.

Joining him on his journey back home are human hologram Rimmer (Barrie), the humanoid descendent of his pet cat (John-Jules) and android manservant Kryten (Llewellyn).
