Black Eyed Peas - Rapper Taboo: 'Dui Arrest Saved My Life'
BLACK EYED PEAS star TABOO credits his 2007 DUI arrest for saving him from a hell of drugs and alcohol abuse.
The Boom Boom Pow hitmaker, real name Jaime Luis Gomez, was busted following a minor collision in Los Angeles and the star admits the legal trouble was the wake up call he desperately needed to straighten out his life.
He says, "Drugs and alcohol took over my life. March 27, 2007, it hit me, the day that I got arrested... I got pulled over and they said, 'Put your hands on top of your head', because I got in an accident. And I was like, 'Am I getting (set up on practical joke show) Punk'd?' because I was so messed up. And then they said, 'You're on some drug, what's up with your eye?' I said, 'I'm Black Eyed Peas!' They said, 'We don't care if you're Black Eyed Peas, you're going to jail just like everybody else!'"
But Taboo, who will become a dad for the third time in May (11), will forever be thankful for the police intervention.
He adds, "Thank god that that happened because now I'm four years sober."
The rapper opens up about his dark past in his new autobiography, Fallin' Up: My Story.
