Randy Travis has stabilized after his emergency surgery last week. The surgery intended to relieve pressure on the country singer's brain following a stroke.

Travis was admitted to A&E at Baylor Medical Center near his home in Tioga, Texas on 7th July. He was later admitted to The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano.

He was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, which means his heart struggles to pump sufficient blood around the body. This condition can lead to congestive heart failure, which happened in Travis' case. His condition was aggravated as Travis suffered from a viral infection for 3 weeks before his hospital admittance.

Doctors have said the 54-year-old singer will take months to recover. His doctor, Gary Erwin said Travis "is awake and alert and interacting with his family and friends and beginning to start doing some early physical therapy". He discussed Travis' condition via a video conference.

Mary Davis, Travis' fiancée is by his side. She believed whilst appearing on the same video conference that Travis was aware of his surroundings and was able to communicate. She said "he is responding well to voices and he sees and he understands"

Although Travis' doctors "anticipate it will take months to recover from the stroke", the country singer does appear to be improving rapidly. Davis said "he is miles beyond where any of us thought he would be a few days ago"

Despite a history of alcoholism, which can cause congestive heart failure, Travis' doctors have confirmed his condition is not a direct result of his drinking habit.
