Rain Fails To Dampen Glasto Spirits

by | 22 June 2007

It may be raining and mud squelching under foot, but the weather has not managed to dampen the spirits of Glastonbury festival-goers just yet.

Music fans have been turning up at the Somerset farm since Wednesday to bag the best camping plots and since then the green fields have been slowly turning to brown as 148,000 pairs of wellies trample from the various stages to the beer tent and back again.

The washout seen in previous years is unlikely however as festival organisers have made a number of improvements to the site.

Very heavy rain interspersed with moments of glorious sunshine have seen people pulling off the waterproof ponchos and pulling on the sunglasses, but the promise of headline acts performing over the next few days is more than enough to keep the mood positive.

Festival-goer Martin Ashplant, 26, said that the mood is "pretty good" but he is "just praying the tent survives".

"It wouldn't be Glasto without pools of mud and ponchos!" he quipped.

Things are looking up on the weather front for Saturday; the Met Office is predicting cloud and sunshine for the day and no rain is set to pummel tent roofs during Saturday night.

Headlining the festival tonight on the Pyramid Stage are Arctic Monkeys, who are likely to have a more than warmed up crowd following appearances by Kasabian, The Fratellis, Bloc Party, The Magic Numbers and Amy Winehouse on the same stage during the afternoon and evening.

The Killers and The Who headline the festival on Saturday and Sunday nights respectively.
