Raffi Cavoukian's Whale Inspiration Dies
10 August 2012Kavna died at Vancouver Aquarium on Monday (06Aug12), aged 46. Cancerous lesions are thought to be the root of her death.
Cavoukian penned his 1980 release Baby Beluga, about an imaginary whale that swims free in the ocean, after meeting the mammal in 1979.
Paying tribute to Kavna, Cavoukian says, "She had a profound impact on me. (Kavna) came out of the water and placed a gentle, graceful kiss on my cheek and I couldn't stop talking about it for a couple of weeks! That encounter inspired the song Baby Beluga, and as I like to say, the song set the whale free."
