With 122,000 units sold after its first week on sale in the US, the album marks Radiohead's second number one across the pond, after 2000's Kid A.
However the unique download-only initial release of In Rainbows looks to have affected its sales figures, with its first week tally markedly less than the Oxford quintet's biggest ever US release.
2003's Hail to the Thief shipped 300,000 copies in its first week on release, their career-best opening week.
In Rainbows was released online on October 10th with fans able to pay whatever they liked for the album.
Although it is believed more than one million people downloaded the tracks, a study by internet research group ComScore found that just 38 per cent of fans downloading the tracks chose to pay for them.
In a posting on their Dead Air Space blog last month, the band confirmed the download area would shut December 10th, ahead of the album's physical release in the UK on December 31st.
"A big thank you to everyone who came and downloaded The Music," the posting added.
"It's been the most positive thing we've done and we hope you shared the experience with others.
