Queen's May Hands In Phd

Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May has handed in his PhD thesis, more than 30 years after first starting it.

The 60-year-old rocker abandoned his astronomy studies in the 1970s to form Queen with Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor.

But three decades on, the 48,000-word work Radical Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud has been submitted to Imperial College London.

"It feels very exciting. It was hard work, but I've had a really great time at the college," May said.

"Two experts in the field will now grill me and probably give me hell. But I have a stoical view of life – that it will be what it will be. I've done the work and I'm proud of it."

The guitarist, who has spent the last nine months picking up his research where he left off at an observatory in the Canary Islands, has already been awarded an honorary doctorate and co-authored a science book for children with Sir Patrick Moore.

If his thesis on dust clouds moving in the same direction as planets in space is accepted, he could be awarded his PhD in a year's time.
