Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has bowed out of all her planned engagements for the coming week (begs04Mar13) as she continues to battle a stomach infection.

The 86-year-old monarch was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London on Sunday (03Mar13) to receive treatment for a suspected bout of gastroenteritis, marking her first hospital stay in 10 years.

She has postponed or cancelled her upcoming appearances, including a two-day visit to Italy on Wednesday (06Mar13), but a Buckingham Palace spokesperson insists the hospitalisation is "a precautionary measure".

The royal had already skipped an event in Swansea, Wales, on Saturday (02Mar13) due to the illness.
