Python Movie To Become Subject Of Bbc Drama

The BBC plans to produce a drama about the religious controversy that surrounded the release of Monty Python's Life of Brian in 1972. The film, Holy Flying Circus , written by Tony Roche, will describe how the Python film drew outrage from church leaders in the U.S. and the U.K., who claimed that it mocked Christ. (In one scene, for example, an "ex-leper" angrily describes how he was cured by Christ "I was hopping along, minding my own business, all of a sudden, up he comes, cures me! One minute I'm a leper with a trade, next minute my livelihood's gone. Not so much as a by-your-leave! 'You're cured, mate.' Bloody do-gooder.") Today's (Tuesday) Guardian newspaper quoted a BBC spokeswoman as saying that none of the surviving Python members has raised any objection to the script, which she described as "fantastical reimagining of the Pythons' struggle with censorship." Like the Python's own shows on the BBC, she said, the drama will incorporate "surreal cutaways" including puppetry and animation.
