The navy velvet design by Victor Edelstein fetched the highest price in an auction of 14 of the British royal's gowns in Toronto, Canada on Thursday (23Jun11).

The late royal wore the off-the-shoulder creation at a 1985 White House event, where she famously danced with Hollywood actor John Travolta.

A cream silk gown the Princess of Wales wore on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine sold for approximately $256,000 (£160,000) while another bidder paid $193,000 (£121,000) for a pearl-covered number she wore in the same Mario Testino photoshoot.
