Potter Rules National Movie Awards

The fifth instalment in the Harry Potter series was the big winner at the first ever National Movie Awards last night.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix scored a hat-trick of gongs at the show at London's Royal Festival Hall and Daniel Radcliffe has his adoring fanbase to thank for the movie's success.

The winners in every category were chosen by the public, who sent in votes via text, the internet or by filling in forms at UK cinemas.

The fifth film in the Potter series won best family film, while 18-year-old Radcliffe pulled off a surprise win in the best male category, pipping Casino Royale star Daniel Craig to the post.

Radcliffe's co-star Emma Watson grabbed the prize for best female actress, overcoming an esteemed list of nominees.

Seventeen-year-old Watson admitted that scooping the award ahead of Dame Judi Dench, Keira Knightley and Eva Green was a huge surprise.

Asked if she expected to win, Watson said: "I can honestly, honestly say I didn't. I didn't dare to dream."

Though Daniel Craig failed to receive personal recognition for reviving the James Bond franchise, Casino Royale picked up the award for best action and adventure movie.

The phenomenally successful Bond films also won the special recognition award.

It was a good night for British film, with action comedy Hot Fuzz scooping the best comedy title trophy, ahead of Borat, Night at the Museum and Mr Bean's Holiday.

Hot Fuzz star Simon Pegg said afterwards: "It's a complete joy. We were nervous and you always kind of hope, you pretend you don't care, but you do really.

"You get called out and it's wonderful, a real treat and I hope this goes on and on and we win more and more in the future."

Pegg is currently riding high in the UK box office charts with Run Fat Boy Run, directed by former Friends star David Schwimmer.

Among the attendees at the glitzy South Bank show were Dame Helen Mirren, Christian Slater, Jamie Foxx, Andy Serkis and OC-star Mischa Barton.

Take That performed their new song Rule the World – from the new movie Stardust – at the ceremony, broadcast on ITV1 at 21:30 BST tonight.
