Pompeo 'The Star' Of Grey's Anatomy

TV beauty ELLEN POMPEO baffled the media at the Monte Carlo TV Festival last week (ends07JUL06) when she was interviewed separately from her GREY'S ANATOMY castmates. Pompeo's spokeswoman JENNIFER ALLEN insists the actress, who plays MEREDITH GREY in the medical drama, didn't insist on the separate interview, but the show's producers Touchstone Television did. Allen tells gossip site PageSix.com, "It was at the request of broadcasters that she interview alone because she is the star of the show." Despite Pompeo being declared 'the star' of the show - her castmate SANDRA OH has won a series of accolades for her performance as DR CHRISTINA YANG, including a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and a Golden Globe.

Ellen Pompeo Refused To Romance Isaiah Washington Onscreen 3896260 News

Actress Ellen Pompeo made it clear she did not want Isaiah Washington to play her onscreen love interest on hit medical drama Grey's Anatomy because she felt the mixed race storyline would be "too close to home".

The white star, who is married to African-American music producer Chris Ivery, reveals show creator Shonda Rhimes wanted to pair her Meredith Grey with Washington's Dr. Preston Burke during the programme's early days, but Pompeo objected and suggested she romance Patrick Dempsey's character instead.

She tells the New York Post, "You know they wanted Isaiah Washington to be my boyfriend. Shonda really wanted to put a black man in the mix. I didn't think they were really going to put an interracial couple on the show and I didn't want him. It was too close to home. I said I wanted that Dempsey kid."

Washington ended up leaving the programme after its third season after uttering a homophobic slur towards castmate T.R. Knight in an on-set dispute with Dempsey in 2007, and Pompeo admits tensions had already been running high: "I think that once Isaiah did not get the role (of Grey's lover) it backfired."

Pompeo also spoke candidly about Katherine Heigl's abrupt exit from Grey's Anatomy in 2010, stating, "You could understand why she wanted to go - when you're offered $12 million a movie and you're only 26. But Katie's problem is that she should not have renewed her contract. She re-upped, took a big raise and then tried to get off the show. And then her movie career did not take off."

She adds, "Hurt feelings, combined with instant success and huge pay cheques started things spinning out of control. The crazier things got, as I watched all the tumult with Isaiah and then the Katie thing, I started to focus on the work. I just tried to not pay attention to all the noise around me."

On The Eve Of The 200th "Grey's Anatomy" Episode, Ellen Pompeo Dishes On Drama, Celebrations And Former Colleagues 3895821 News

Drama rules on Grey’s Anatomy – so much so, that quite a lot of it appears to have crossed over from the screen to the actual set, Grey’s star Ellen Pompeo revealed in a recent interview with The New York Post. The Post caught up with Ellen Pompeo and the rest of the Grey’s cast (or what remains of it, at least) on set for the TV drama’s 200th episode, which also happens to be a party – on screen, as well as in real life.

Ellen Pompeo, Grey's Anatomy 200 Episodes Party
Pompeo has tried to steer clear of the drama, surrounding some cast members' departures.

Creator Shonda Rimes, the cast and crew do have a lot to celebrate – over its 200 episodes, Grey’s has become a television staple, up there in the bastion with shows like Friends and CSI: Miami. But success didn’t come without plenty of growing pains, and star Ellen Pompeo, who plays Dr. Meredith Grey on the show, finally let the word out on how and why a lot of the cast drama happened – particularly with Katherine Heigl, who played Dr Izzie Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy.

“When Katie left, it was tough,” she says. “You could understand why she wanted to go — when you’re offered $12 million a movie and you’re only 26. But Katie’s problem is that she should not have renewed her contract. She re-upped, took a big raise and then tried to get off the show. And then her movie career did not take off.”

Katherine Heigl, NYFW
Heigl, on the other hand, caused quite a lot of uproar when she left the show in search of better opportunities.

Still, Pompeo makes it clear that there were no hard feelings after Heigl’s difficult departure: "I love Katie. She is a doll, and she was a pro, always on her mark; a great talent.”

As for Washington, his exit, earlier on in the series, was even more troublesome. “You know they wanted Isaiah Washington to be my boyfriend,” Pompeo is quoted as saying in the article. “Shonda really wanted to put a black man in the mix. I didn’t think they were really going to put an interracial couple on the show and I didn’t want him. It was too close to home.”

Ellen Pompeo is  married to Chris Ivery, an African-American music producer. “I said I wanted that Dempsey kid. I think that once Isaiah did not get the role it backfired,” she says.

It isn’t entirely clear what she means by that, but it’s a widely known fact that in Washington’s contract wasn’t renewed in 2007, following his use of derogatory homophobic slurs on multiple occasions. But that was then and this is now. After 200 episodes and plenty of off-screen turmoil, most of the original cast – Justin Chambers, Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, James Pickens Jr, Pompeo and Chandra Wilson – are still standing, although Oh recently announced her departure. For those curious, she is leaving on good terms.

Sandra Oh, Grey's Anatomy 20th Episode Party
Sandra Oh is the lastest of the original cast members to leave the show.

Stormy Weather Continues On 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 10 Premiere 3882953 News

The premiere of season 10 of Grey's Anatomy aired last night (Thursday 26th September). Last season ended with a storm and this season's premiere continued with it still blustering in the background.

Ellen Pompeo

Here's a quick recap (beware - spoilers included!):

The major medical emergency the team faced was Richard (James Pickens Jr.), lying electrocuted, who was discovered by Heather Brooks (Tina Majorino) the new and ambitious intern. Sadly, Heather is electrocuted by the same puddle which caught Richard last season. Unfortunately Heather dies, despite Derek's best efforts.

Richard is worked on by Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Alex (Justin Chambers) and Cristina (Sandra Oh). When his heart is stabilized, Bailey searches out his next of kin in order to acquire permission for surgery. As it transpires, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is down as Richard's emergency contact. No one thinks Richard is strong enough to survive the surgery, nevertheless Meredith gives the go-ahead.

A short way into the operation, Richard's girlfriend Catherine Avery charges in, ordering Bailey to stop the op. Bailey, strangely, does so. After consulting Meredith, again, the operation once again goes ahead and Richard is saved. In terms of romance, the episode primarily focussed on the relationship between Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). The couple are involved in a bitter custody battle and lesbian divorce, something which, as THR points out, is rarely featured on television. Callie is still furious at Arizona for having an affair with a visiting doctor last season.

Sandra Oh

Sandra Oh, who plays Dr Cristina Yang, announced in August that she would be leaving the show at the end of this season. Creator Shonda Rhimes did not reveal how she and the writing crew intended to remove the character from the show and few clues were provided in the first episode.

Cristina has, on the other hand, been suffering owing to her relationship with Owen (Kevin McKidd). It seems that even though the couple are no longer together, there's still plenty of heat in their relationship as they quarrel twice during the episode. Love is in the air elsewhere however as Jo and Alex continue their tryst in the on-call room. April (Sarah Drew) continues waiting for Jackson (Jesse Williams) to give her a reason not to marry her current fiancé, at the end of the episode Jackson encourages April to reaccept paramedic Matthew's proposal.

Oh and Meredith's baby is really cute too - one of the few high points in the dramatic season premiere.

Sandra Oh Is Departing 'Grey's Anatomy' After Ten Seasons As Dr Cristina Yang 3814328 News

Sandra Oh has announced she will be leaving Grey's Anatomy. Season ten of the show will air in September of this year and Oh will be leaving the medical drama at the end of the upcoming season, due to be aired next spring.

Sandra OhSandra Oh at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Presents 'Welcome To Shondaland': An Evening With Shonda Rhimes & Friends, in North Hollywood.

Oh has played Dr Cristina Yang since the show's premiere in 2005, however, after 8 years in the role she has decided to move on. On the subject of leaving the show, Oh told The Hollywood Reporter when they broke the news yesterday (13 August) that "it's been a great privilege to play the character of Cristina Yang." She continued by saying, "I am both sad and excited to see where this, her [Oh's character Yang] final season, will take her."

Oh said the cast and crew of Grey's Anatomy were supportive of her decision to leave the show. On the matter, Oh said, "it was an emotional and deeply creative decision for me and I feel fully supported by creator Shonda Rhimes and the writers."

Oh continued by saying she had no regrets in leaving the role as she had been "able to explore and grow" her character "fully" and "completely."

However, Oh is surely going to be missed as creator Rhimes said, "I have been made better by Sandra's trust, faith and friendship and I can't quantify how grateful I am for her collaboration on a character we both love so deeply."

Shonda Rhimes

Equally, Kevin McKidd who joined the show in season 5 has stated he will miss Oh's presence on set. He claimed, whilst being interviewed by THR, that he was not surprised by Oh's news as he "had a feeling it might be coming and that it was the right time for her."

He went on to say "I've had the great fortune and luck to be her acting partner and for her to be my acting partner for the last half a decade."

Although Oh plays one of the show's main characters, alongside Dr Grey (Ellen Pompeo); Dr Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Dr Karev (Justin Chambers), the show has no intention of finishing just yet. Quite the contrary, as a statement issued by ABC at the same time as Oh's revealed that the medical drama will be around for a few more years at least. A spokesperson said,  "it's our intention to have Grey's on the air for many years to come, with as many of the original cast as possible."

Oh's departure will definitely signify a change in the show, as her character's relationship with Dr Grey is one of the focal points. On this matter, Rhimes said, "this year is going to be bittersweet for us - we're both going to savor every moment of Cristina Yang and then we're going to give her the exit she deserves. And when Sandra walks out of my door, Grey's Anatomy will once again be forever changed."

Grey's Anatomy season ten will premiere on September 26 2013.
