Police Watchdog Investigates 'Anti-semitic' Gibson Reports

LATEST: A Los Angeles police watchdog is investigating claims that local sheriff's deputies tried to cover up MEL GIBSON's alleged anti-Semitic verbal attack on the officer who arrested him for drink driving. THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST director was arrested for driving under the influence in Malibu, California, on Friday (28JUL06), and allegedly blasted arresting officer JAMES MEE. Entertainment website TMZ posted what it claims is the original arrest report over the weekend (29JUL06), which alleges Gibson raged, "F**king Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." The Office of Independent Review are now set to investigate if cops gave the Hollywood star preferential treatment by concealing his alleged comments, according to the New York Daily News. The office's Chief Attorney MIKE GENNACO says, "Assuming that the report was excised, then the question is, was it done for a good reason within regulations?" However, Sheriff LEE BACA tells the Los Angeles Times newspaper, "There is no cover-up. Our job is not to (focus) on what he said. It's to establish his blood-alcohol level when he was driving and proceed with the case. Trying someone on rumour and innuendo is no way to run an investigation, at least one with integrity." After Gibson was released on $5,000 (GBP2,680) bail, he released a statement apologising for his behaviour, calling the incident a "horrific relapse".
