Beyonce - Police Called To U.k. Arena Amid Beyonce Fan Crush Chaos
Police officers were called to a major music venue in Manchester, England over the weekend (22-24Feb13) to control fans of Beyonce following a stampede for concert tickets.
The Crazy In Love superstar announced plans to embark on The Mrs. Carter Show world tour earlier this month (Feb13), and tickets for gigs on the U.K. leg of the trek went on sale at 9.30am (Gmt) on Saturday (23Feb13).
Fans began queuing at the MEN Arena on Friday night (22Feb13) to ensure they were in line when the box office opened.
However, hordes of touts pushed in and caused chaos, and officials at the arena had to bring in cops to act as peacemakers.
A spokesman for the Manchester venue says, "Since the Beyonce dates were announced two weeks ago we strongly advised all customers not to travel to the venue box office as tickets could not be guaranteed due to the anticipated high demand.
"Unfortunately, when we opened our doors at 5.30am what had been an orderly queue immediately stormed (sic) the box office windows causing a potential crush. Despite the best efforts of our stewards and security staff we had to involve British Transport Police in an attempt to restore order. Even then the safety of genuine fans could not be guaranteed and, following police advice, the box office remained closed."
Tickets for the 11 U.K. dates sold out in under 10 minutes, and some are now being listed online for as much as $960 (£600) each.
