Pirate Party A Surprise Winner In Berlin
The Motion Picture Association of America was No Doubt left reeling by results of Sunday's elections in Berlin that saw Germany's Pirate Party win 8.9 percent of the vote to take 15 seats in the Berlin house of representatives. In an interview with The New York Times , Christoph Bieber, a professor of political science at the University of Duisburg-Essen, said that the Pirate Party representatives, who won in every district where they had put up candidates, had "really found an underexploited theme that the other political parties are not dealing with." Besides opposing Germany's current copyright laws, the party demands that all government data be open to the public, that marijuana be legalized, and that public transit be made free. Charles Hawley, an editor of Spiegel Online, commented today (Tuesday) that the victory of the Pirates represents "the most surprising political success stories Germany has seen in recent years."
