by | 16 September 2008

Pineapple Express has debuted at the top of the UK box office charts after its first weekend on release.

The stoner comedy, starring Seth Rogen and James Franco, took £1.3 million to mirror its chart-topping performance across the Atlantic.

Rogen stars as a court clerk and regular marijuana smoker who goes on the run with his drug dealer James Franco after witnessing a murder.

Musical adaptation Mamma Mia!, which claimed three prizes at last week's National Movie Awards - remains in second place while last week's number one, RocknRolla, slips to third.

The Women, a new ensemble comedy drama starring Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Debra Messing and Eva Mendes, claimed fourth position after its first three days in UK cinemas while the top five was completed by Keira Knightley-starring period drama The Duchess, which fell two places.

The next highest new entry was Holocaust drama The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, at eight, while The Dark Knight has retained a top ten position, some eight weeks after being released.
