Pierce Brosnan - Pierce Brosnan praises 'magnificent' 007 Daniel Craig

Pierce Brosnan thinks Daniel Craig is a ''magnificent'' James Bond.

The 59-year-old actor - who portrayed the suave spy in four movies until 2002's 'Die Another Day' - believes his successor is the perfect choice for the character at present because he is so ''hard'' and the franchise has moved on to a different era, thanks largely to competition from the 'Bourne' movie series.

He said: ''Bond was a glorious time for me. I have nothing but gratitude for having played such a role. And Daniel is magnificent. He's a very hard man. Daniel gives 150 per cent of himself to it constantly, both physically and emotionally. He's a Bond for this age and this time.

''Once I saw Matt Damon come onto the stage with 'The Bourne Identity', I could see that the stakes had been upped. My era of playing Bond was still a cross-pollination of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. They hadn't made that leap into the next phase; the huge action, and a more brutal Bond.''

Despite being impressed with Daniel's portrayal of Bond, Pierce admits to feeling envious when he saw recent film 'Skyfall', which saw the spy's boss M meet her end, as he would've loved to have shot the moving scene with Dame Judi Dench.

He told Yahoo! movies: ''I would have loved to have held her in my arms myself. I would have loved to have played that scene with her. But it was not meant to be for me. It was Daniel's moment and his time.

''Dame Judi is such a magnificent lady in every sense of the word: as a human being and as an actress. Her presence on stage and screen is so magnetic. Her graciousness in life is so beautiful. So there you go. Sic transit gloria mundi [Thus passes the glory of the world].''

Let Me In: Pierce Brosnan Wants In On The Expendables Fun 4268538 News

Pierce Brosnan fits the bill for a potential role in The Expendables franchise, assuming the remit is: aging action stars looking for another hefty payday. And it’s hard to argue that it’s not.

Pierce BrosnanKeep dressing like that, Pierce, and the role's yours

The former James Bond star has expressed his desire to get in on the action, and his inclusion would certainly open up a new avenue of comedy revenue; you can just imagine the 007 jokes filtering through as the suave former British spy kicks it with the all-American action heroes.

"I said to Avi Lerner, 'If it works out and you have a good script, Avi, you know where to find me if you still want me.' It's as simple as that really," Brosnan said, talking of his chat with the film’s producer.

"Sylvester Stallone is the one that's given us these wonderful platforms for actors who have and had careers to go play and have fun and to entertain. To bring a bunch of guys together who saved the world, fought the bad guys, and put them all on the same stage, that's crazy good,” he added. (Guardian)

"It's just about entertainment. Avi is somebody I've heard about and his movies always have big brash entertainment value to them. You can really change the world and that's great, but The Expendables? Yeah, I'd love to do The Expendables. It's just a kick in the pants."

Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham and Jet Li have all helped the franchise reach nearly $600m from the global box office, with a third entry set to hit cinemas this August. Mel Gibson stars as the main villain in the film while Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford and Antonio Banderas all join the cast. Could we see an Expendables 4 with someone holding a genuine license to kill?

The November Man 4237996 Videos 10th June 2014

Peter Devereaux is a former CIA agent and a brilliant tutor, who taught his ex pupil the responsibility of taking a man's life and warned him of the dangers of having loved ones in his life. Now, though, that pupil is an incredibly skilled spy with skills that even match those of Devereaux's, and the pair have been forced to fight against one another in a lethal mission that sees only the top CIA operatives in combat over the forthcoming new Russian president. Does Devereaux still have the skills to bring the mission to a swift conclusion? Or is his former protege now stronger than his guide has ever been?

This high-octane action spy thriller is based on the novel 'There Are No Spies' by Bill Granger; the seventh book in 1987 'The November Man' series. The movie has been directed by Roger Donaldson ('The Bank Job', 'Species', 'The Recruit', 'The Getaway') with writers Michael Finch ('Predators') and Karl Gajdusek ('Oblivion', 'Trespass', 'Last Resort'), and it has been executively produced by main star Pierce Brosnan. 'The November Man' is due for US cinematic release on August 27th 2014 and is the first spy movie Brosnan has appeared in since his final James Bond movie 'Die Another Day'.

Emma Thompson Says 'Love Punch' Marriage Sabbatical Is "Not A Bad Idea" 4160085 News

Emma Thompson has stepped forward to say that she's all for taking a year out of a marriage in what's known as a "sabbatical" if it is "done properly." The 54 year-old film star and mother-of-two, who is currently promoting her new comedy, The Love Punch, revealed to The Telegraph that she is a form advocate of "taking a break from each other" though not complicating things by not being with other people.

"I wonder whether this isn't the way forward for a lot of married couples? You look at it and think that maybe every marriage should have a kind of a sabbatical, that couples should be forced to take a break from each other every so often, if just for a year or so," Thompson revealed, adding "It's actually not a bad idea."

She reasoned "You need to go off perhaps, although not to be with other people. I think that would make things very difficult: All that free love stuff has been tried and tested and doesn't work and has been proven to make relationships very, very tricky. But I'm sure a sabbatical could work if it were done properly."

The Love Punch sees Thompson star alongside Pierce Brosnan as Richard and Kate, two middle class and middle aged parents who decide to take some time out from their marriage after they can no longer stand being with each other. Richard discovers that his investment firm has been the subject of a fraud scheme, stripping him of any assets including his and Kate's retirement fund.

Incensed, they decide to travel to Paris to target the man responsible and on the way discover that he has given his fiancée a diamond necklace worth $10 million. This sets the cogs turning for Kate, who suggests that they get their nest egg back by stealing the diamond and cashing it in.

Was Pierce Brosnan Really The Worst Bond? 4159375 News

Poor Pierce Brosnan has got it in his head that he was never good enough when it came to playing legendary secret service agent, James Bond. He was recently quoted as saying, “I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger [Moore] and Sean [Connery]…it was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me. The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterisation didn’t have a follow-through of reality, it was surface. But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well.”

Pierce Brosnan James Bond Brosnan had the looks and the accent, but does that make him a good Bond?

We think that Pierce is being a little too hard on himself, but we do get where he’s coming from. Playing James Bond is a massive amount of pressure on any actor. It’s a hugely exposed role and some great actors have taken the helm in the past. In our opinion, the problem wasn’t actually Pierce Brosnan. We understand what he was trying to do with the role, he was trying to recapture the Connery times, when being a smooth talking spy was all it took to save the world. Unfortunately, by the 90s the public demanded something a little more from their characters. Bond needed to grow with the times and it wasn't Brosnan’s fault that the scripts and direction didn’t account for this.

Although this was clearly a fact that didn't go unnoticed. The rejigged Bond movies starring Daniel Craig were steered in a much more modern direction. Sure, Bond is still suave, but he is more rough and ready, more in tune with what an audience likes to see from an action star today. Essentially, that’s what Bond is, but Brosnan’s Bond never graduated from the 1970’s ideal of what a spy should be.

Daniel Craig James Bond Daniel Craig is considered a successful Bond

What Pierce Brosnan should rest easy knowing is that he is by far not the worst James Bond. George Lazenby is widely accepted to be the worst of the Bonds, but once again, it’s more a case of miscasting than anything else. The problem doesn’t lie with who is playing Bond, but who is conceiving the movies. The casting, the writing and the general feel is what denotes a great Bond movie. What will be most interesting is to find out who will take over from Daniel Craig when he finally finished his stint and whether the Bond movies will continue getting better, or revert to the cliched stereotypes of 80s movies. Only time will tell.

In the meantime we’ll have a martini please, shaken not stirred. Perhaps with a little Daniel Craig on the side. That makes it a Dirty Martini, right?

The Love Punch 4158811 Film Reviews

An old-school caper comedy, this goofy romp struggles to surmount its badly contrived screenplay. Fortunately writer-director Joel Hopkins also has gorgeous locations and a cast of pros who are unafraid to make complete idiots of themselves. They keep us chuckling even when things turn far too silly.

It starts with a hostile corporate takeover in Britain that costs Richard (Pierce Brosnan) and his ex-wife Kate (Emma Thompson) their income and pensions. Still feuding years after their marriage fell apart, they decide to team up, head to Paris and confront new owner Vincent (Laurent Lafitte) about their predicament, as well as the sudden poverty of all of Richard's employees. But Vincent cruelly dismisses them, noting that he liquidated Richard's company to help pay for his extravagant wedding to trophy wide Manon (Louise Bourgoin), who now sports a $10m diamond. So Richard and Kate impulsively decide to crash the marriage and steal the diamond with some help from their old pals Penelope and Jerry (Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall) and their computer-expert son Matt (Jack Wilkinson) back in Britain.

The idea is so preposterous that we just have to go with it, but Hopkins' script never bothers to fill in the gaping plot holes, merely charging into each corny set-piece with gusto. Thomson gets all the needed information about the wedding by joining in on the hen weekend. Spall has a series of dark-horse skills up his sleeve. Wilkinson seems able to do all manner of technical wizardry except the one thing that forces our four heroes to scuba-dive across the bay and scale a cliff, James Bond-style.

All of these things can be picked apart pretty easily, but it's quite clear that the cast and crew knew this all along and only intend for us to laugh with them at the general absurdity. It also helps that Brosnan and Thomson make a terrific on-screen pair. We never doubt that Richard and Kate will get back together, but there are some nice surprises along the way. And Imrie and Spall add plenty of wackiness along the way. Together, these four even manage to bring out some subtle moments of comedy and emotion along the way. So it's a shame the film is never more than mindlessly frivolous.

Brosnan, Thompson Are Far, Far Better Than 'The Love Punch' 4159245 News

Pierce Brosnan, Emma Thompson, Timothy Spall and Celia Imrie is a pretty good cast. It just is. And there The Love Punch - a Great Marigold Hotel style movie set in the Cote d'Azur probably should work - but it hasn't really.

It stars ex-husband and wife Richard and Kate (Brosnan and Thompson) whose biting banter suggests the flames of their former relationship have not been fully extinguished. When their retirement nest egg is wiped out when Richard's investment firm is defrauded, the divorced duo travel to France to steal a $10 million diamond ring from the financier behind the scheme. Of course, Spall and Imrie play the couple's former neighbours who are roped in to assist the heist.

"Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan deserve better than this creaky heist-caper comedy from 'Last Chance Harvey' director Joel Hopkins," Charles Gant of Variety.

"You haven't seen cringeworthy till you've seen a group of mature British actors in granny-beige M&S slacks doing the Reservoir Dogs walk," wrote Cath Clarke of Time Out.

"Tonally wonky, comedically creaky and confuses light-as-a-soufflé with just plain silly," wrote Jane Crowther of Total Film.

"Brosnan and Thompson seem hell-bent on a good time, but Joel Hopkins' broad, lazy script is no sparkler," said Siobhan Synnot of the Scotsman.

"There's herbal teas that hit harder than The Love Punch," said Henry Barnes of The Guardian.

During a recent interview with The Telegraph, Brosnan explained his feelings on the movie, saying, ""It was enormous fun. No acting required. Just show up and have a good time, really."

'Mrs Doubtfire' Sequel? Robin Williams To Don Wig And Fake Boobs Once More! 4159243 News

Robin Williams is set to reprise his role in the surprise sequel to the 1993 comedy, Mrs. Doubtfire, which will reportedly be directed by the original's Chris Columbus, according to THR. 21 years after the original movie, the news of a Mrs. Doubtfire sequel has come as an unexpected albeit welcome surprise for many fans of the '90s hit.

Robin Williams Will Return To His Lauded 'Mrs. Doubfire' Comedy Role For A Sequel.

Fox 2000 has tapped Elf writer David Berenbaum to write the sequel with Robin Williams attached to reprise his starring role as divorcee Daniel Hillard, who devises an outrageous plan to work his way back into his hostile wife (Sally Field) and children's lives. After creating an elaborate old lady costume and styling himself as the pleasant Scottish nanny, Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire, he gets himself hired as a housekeeper and nanny to his own children.

Things are going well at first as Mrs. Doubtfire impresses Miranda and the children with her many skills, including cleaning, cooking and playing football. However, he soon becomes jealous of his ex's new love interest Stuart (Pierce Brosnan) and his intricate disguise begins to unravel for all to see.

Sally Field
It's Currently Unclear Whether Sally Field Will Reprise Her Role As Miranda Hillard.

However, not all of the original cast members are on board the prospect of reprising their Doubtfire roles. "Sequels generally suck unless they were planned as part of a trilogy or series. I think Doubtfire ended where it needed to end," tweeted Mara Wilson, who plays youngest daughter Lydie in the movie, adding "There are many, many reasons I don't want to be in Mrs. Doubtfire 2. But they haven't even asked me (yet), so no need to worry."

The original took an astounding $219 million domestically and $222 million internationally on a $25 million budget. This may come as news to the film's fans but the sequel has been in the works since 2001 with Bonnie Hunt set to write a script. Despite many drafts and other writers hired, the project became buried and has been inactive for years, apparently mainly due to Columbus and Williams not sparking to any new take.

That the sequel has taken so long to approve is a good sign for the quality of plot of the second film but fans who cherished the original may still feel uneasy at the prospect of reliving such a well-loved children's classic. Without a release date pencilled in, it's still early days for Mrs. Doubtfire 2 and it looks like filmmakers won't be in any rush to churn out a follow-up to one of the funniest comedies of all time just for the sake of it.

Pierce Brosnan On Playing James Bond: "I Wasn’t Good Enough" 4155759 News

Pierce Brosnan’s time as Bond is considered by many to be among the worst portrayals of 007. Sounds harsh, but following icons like Roger Moore and Sean Connery was never going to be easy. Now, Brosnan has admitted that he regrets his performances as the British super spy.

Pierce BrosnanBrosnan doesn't look back on his Bond days fondly

"I felt I was caught in a time warp between Roger [Moore] and Sean [Connery]," explained Brosnan in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. "It was a very hard one to grasp the meaning of, for me. The violence was never real, the brute force of the man was never palpable. It was quite tame, and the characterisation didn't have a follow-through of reality, it was surface. But then that might have had to do with my own insecurities in playing him as well."

Brosnon played Bond four times: 1997’s Tomorrow Never Dies, 1999's The World is not Enough, 1995's Goldeneye and 2002's Die Another Day. But the star can’t face watching himself as Ian Flemming’s creation, who is now portrayed by Daniel Craig to huge critical acclaim. "I have no desire to watch myself as James Bond. 'Cause it's just never good enough. It's a horrible feeling," he added.

The last Bond film, Skyfall, saw Craig pit his wits against Javier Bardem who played a formidable Bond villain. Sam Mendes’ take on the franchise proved to be a huge fiscal success, pulling in over $1b from the global box office, and was even – for a short while at least – rumoured to be in line for a major Oscar nomination.

Bond 24 – which is also being helmed by Mendes – has allegedly enlisted Penelope Cruz to play the iconic Bond girl. A source stold The Sun: “Bond bosses have been chasing her since Daniel became 007 in 2006. But schedules and her pregnancies meant it never materialised. At this stage no one at Sony will confirm it.”

Emma Thompson & Pierce Brosnan Are Amateur Jewel Thieves In 'The Love Punch' [Trailer & Pictures] 4143287 News

The Love Punch is due out in UK cinemas next week so what are we in for from Last Chance Harvey writer and director Joel Hopkins?

The Love Punch
From L-R: Timothy Spall, Celia Imrie, Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan star in The Love Punch.

The Love Punch promises a stellar cast including British acting powerhouses Emma Thompson, Celia Imrie and Timothy Spall, whilst Irish actor Pierce Brosnan completes the comedic foursome. The film follows Thompson and Brosnan, as Kate and Richard, a divorced couple who find they have been conned out of their retirement funds after Richard's company suffers a hostile takeover. Furious at the injustice, they set out on a mission accompanied by friends Imrie and Spall to recover their stolen savings. Their quest leads them to the Côte d'Azur, via Paris, where they embark on a jewellery heist. We see the relationship between Kate and Richard blossom after their years apart and we're definitely in with a few laughs along the way.

The Love Punch
Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson as divorced couple Richard and Kate in The Love Punch.

The four main actors are supported by a host of recognisable faces including Tuppence Middleton (Tormented); Sabine Crossen (Hitman); Marisa Berensen (Gigola); and Tom Morton (Rani).

Critics have been somewhat cruel to the upcoming romantic comedy which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year. The Guardian critic wrote "There's herbal teas that hit harder than The Love Punch," whilst The Telegraph merely stated the film was "indulgeable." However, it does appear to be an enjoyable middle of the road comedy with plenty of humour. It may not be Oscar winning but it's the sort of cinema viewing ideal for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

The Love Punch
The two couples attempt to regain their pension fund by stealing a diamond.

There's certainly plenty of action involved The Love Punch and Thompson appears to be craving more excitement since! Director and writer, Hopkins recently spoke to the Radio Times about Thompson's stunt driving. He said Thompson loved it, she got a real taste for it. She said I want to do a full on action movie now. She was very game."

The Love Punch is due to be realised in UK cinemas on April 18th.
