The Black Keys playing Lisbon last night (November 27)

An old-school type of success story, The Black Keys' rise to prominence has been solely down to hard work and a lot of gigging, the band putting over seven albums in their decade together and only really hitting the big time on their fifth, Attack & Release which went top 20 in the US in 2008. It's reassuring to see then that they're still doing things how they always did - namely by touring their butts off. Last night the blues rock band called in to Pavilhao Atlantico in Lisbon, Portugal as part of their European tour, and they had Brit indie rockers The Maccabees in tow with them. The Maccabees are no mean size themselves these days, giving you an idea of just how big The Black Keys have become.

Core members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney stuck to what they knew, stoically powering through a career spanning set that still bit like a viper, the group only sometimes embellished by additional live touring musicians. Back when they came out at the beginning of the 2000s they were compared frequently to The White Stripes, but since that duo split up, there's only been one big dog in town when it comes to incisive blues rock, and that's The Black Keys.

The pair have built up a tight chemistry in seven albums and over a decade together

The Black Keys have had a busy 2012 as they capitalise on the success of last year's number two US album charting LP El Camino, and they're far from done yet. The group have a handful of dates left in main land Europe before calling in for six dates in the UK, including two at the O2 Arena in London; they finish the year with two shows at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas on December 30 and 31.
