Philip Seymour Hoffman Confirmed For 'Catching Fire' Role

Philip Seymour Hoffman is the latest star to sign up to the sequel to The Hunger Games, entitled Catching Fire. The 44 year-old actor will play the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, Bbc News reports today (July 9, 2012). His character is the man that devised the bloodthirsty games, which give the series their title. Catching Fire (the second in a series of movies to be adapted from Suzanne Collins' novels), will see the return of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

Last week, it was confirmed that the Donnie Darko star Jena Malone will also feature in Catching Fire, playing the role of Johanna Mason. Filming for the movie will start in September and it is expected that it will rival its predecessor, The Hunger Games, which grossed $678 million at the global box office following its release earlier this year. It has become the second highest grossing movie in the US this year, behind The Avengers. Since the excitement over the first Hunger Games movie has died down, fans have turned their thoughts to what will happen with the sequel.

The original director, Gary Ross has stepped down from his duties and he will be replaced by Francis Lawrence. There has been a great deal of speculation over who will fill the roles introduced in book two. Both Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jena Malone will see retain their roles for the remaining instalments of the franchise. Hoffman will join the movie fresh from receiving a Tony nomination for his stage performance in a Broadway performance of Death of a Salesman.
