Phil Spector Murder Retrial Begins In Los Angeles

by | 29 October 2008

The retrial of music producer Phil Spector begins in Los Angeles today (Wednesday September 29th).

Spector, 66, is accused of shooting actress Lana Clarkson at his home five years ago, just hours after meeting her at the House of Blues on Los Angeles' Sunset Strip, where she worked as a hostess.

A mistrial was declared in his trial in October 2007 after jurors failed to reach a verdict, but after 12 regular jurors and six alternates were selected this month the retrial is ready to begin.

Seven men and five women have been named on the jury for the new trial, which is expected to last until January.

The producer - who worked on classic songs such as Let it Be and You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - is charged with shooting Ms Clarkson at his Alhambra mansion in 2003.

A Los Angeles judge presiding over the murder case of the creator of the 'Wall of Sound' declared a mistrial last year after jurors were split ten to two and were unable to conclude whether Spector is guilty of second degree murder.

Media sources reported at the time that the majority of jurors were in favour of convicting the pioneering record maker.

Spector had three legal teams during the first trial, after he fired his first and the second resigned.

His need for a new team for the second trial came after his leading lawyer Roger Rosen stepped down - along with two other colleagues - to work for other clients.

Spector faces a minimum of 15 years in jail if found guilty.
