Phil Everly has died aged 74.

The Everly Brothers musician passed away yesterday (03.01.14) in California following complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

He is survived by his wife Patti, his brother Don, their mother Margaret, sons Jason and Chris, and two granddaughters

Patti revealed he ''fought long and hard'' against his illness, which was the result of a lifetime of smoking cigarettes.

She told the Los Angeles Times newspaper: ''We are absolutely heartbroken. He fought long and hard.''

Phil and his brother Don made up an iconic music duo, and the two siblings enjoyed a successful and influential career.

As well as inspiring the likes of The Beatles and The Beach Boys, the pair were collectively one of the first ten acts to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame during its inaugural year in 1986.

They rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s, and went on to release hits like 'Wake Up Little Suzie', 'Bye Bye Love', 'When Will I Be Loved', 'All I Have to Do is Dream' and 'Cathy's Clown'.
