It’s been discovered that a conman, who posed as the brother of the comedian Peter Kay, has been nabbed pretending to raise money for a boy who has a rare form of cancer.

The pretty despicable act was revealed in full to Derby Crown Court as the man – real  name Peter Stead – admitted to five counts of fraud. According to the BBC, Stead told pub landlords he would organise comedy nights to fundraise for the Derby-based Lewis Mighty Fund. The 50-year-old took money for the bookings but never turned up.Lewis Mighty died aged just seven-years-old in May 2012, suffering from a cruel form of cancer called neuroblastoma.

An investigation had been launched in 2009 by Derbyshire police, after it was reported by several local landlords that a man had tricked them out of money by pretending to ‘Peter Kay’s brother,’ Danny Kay. During Stead’s run of hoax nights, Mighty’s own parents were to raise £300,000 £300,000 so that he could undergo immunotherapy treatment in the US. Speaking of the case, Lewis' mother Jaime said: "[Stead] tapped into that and completely milked it, just to line his own pockets. I think he's disgusting and despicable." Three of the cases took place in Derby, with one in Nottinghamshire and one in Northamptonshire. Stead is to remain in custody until he’s sentenced on June 21st.
