Pete Wentz Raises Profile Of The Academy Is... Drummer's Hospital Fund
The former The Academy Is... drummer, aka The Butcher, was walking home after a night out near Humbolt Park in Milwaukee, Wisconsin when he was attacked by thugs, who stole his valuables and beat him up.
The altercation left Mrotek, who does not have health insurance, with a broken jaw and other fractured bones in his face, and his former bandmate Adam T. Siska reveals the injured musician has had to undergo multiple surgeries, including one to screw three titanium plates into his skull, and additional treatment for bleeding and pain as a result of the beating.
His friends and rock peers have now rallied to establish a fund to help contribute to the mounting medical costs as he continues to receive doctors' care.
In a post on the band's Fueled By Ramen label's website, Siska writes, "The members and former members of The Academy Is..., Cobra Starship, Gym Class Heroes, Fall Out Boy & Panic! At the Disco built a very strong bond over our years of making music and touring the world together. We all want to see to it that The Butcher is able to continue making music and art that inspires us - instead of spending his days trying to pay off a never ending debt due to this tragic event. The 5 of us have put our collective efforts together to bring you this shirt.
"100 per cent of the proceeds will go to Andy... which will hopefully make a dent in his bills. Our good friends at Fbr (Fueled By Ramen) have donated the shirts and printing... If you want to donate more money (maybe you have a rich uncle who is living in a gold mansion) or if you aren't into getting a shirt you can donate directly to Andy.".
And ex-Fall Out Boy star Wentz is hoping to boost donations to the cause by directing his more than 2.5 million fans to the website selling the T-shirts.
He writes, "Our buddy the butcher from the academy is got (sic) mugged & beat up pretty bad. Find out how you can help out here".
