Pete Doherty Fined For Drug Possessionby Contributor | 04 December 2006
Pete Doherty was fined £770 and banned from driving for four months this morning for five counts of drug possession.
District Judge Jane McIvor told the Babyshambles frontman at Thames magistrates court that the offences were not serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.
Doherty was arrested by police on three separate occasions between April 20th and August 7th this year and was charged in August with five counts of possessing cocaine, heroin and cannabis.
He appeared at Thames magistrates court in September for sentencing but it was deferred until today's date to allow magistrates time to assess his drugs rehabilitation progress.
Although the results were said to be "impressive" in September, a further assessment in court in October branded his progress as "optimistic-ish".
As part of his rehabilitation Doherty attended The Priory, a treatment centre known for the high-profile celebrities who have received help there.
At the last court assessment, the 27-year-old's lawyer said: "On the whole progress is being made. He is giving up a lifestyle he has been living in the East End. It is not the best place for him to be. There are alternatives for him."
Doherty is due to return to court in January for a further review of his progress.
