Penny Lane To Be Renamed?

Penny Lane, the street immortalised by THE BEATLES in a song of the same name, could be renamed because of its links with the slave trade. Both JOHN LENNON and SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY grew up near Liverpool, England, road and famously sang about it on 1960s album THE MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR. However the tourist hotspot could be lost forever after it was revealed the street was named in honour of slave trader JAMES PENNY. To improve race relations in the city, it has been proposed the route be altered to commemorate the life of local black teenager ANTHONY WALKER instead, who was brutally murdered in a racist attack in Liverpool last year (05). City Councillor BARBARA MACE says, "My proposal is to rename several streets in the city centre which are named after the most notorious slave traders." However, MCCartney's brother MIKE is furious at the plans, and insists it should be residents, not politicians, who vote on the proposals. He says, "PENNY LANE is quite a wonderful song and being able to go and visit the street means an awful lot to people. "It is a particularly sensitive time for the black community in Liverpool and it should be up to them to decide."

i have to agree with all that has been written.I think these councillors try to make a name for themselves by being politically correct. What her name has the same pyschology as Dr Beeching who scrapped alot of our railways lines. He was only known for that and the idiots name is still remembered only for that reason. This stupid woman is the same and i urge her followers to ditch her at the next election. It was The Beatles who made Penny Lane famous before this stupid woman was in her nappies and she owe it to them for the continued interest and revenue for people coming to Liverpool to see their heroes landmarks.Renaming Penny Lane,Banning Christmas trees as not to insult other faiths, what is next? Where do these idiots come from? And these people try and run our country? The only way is to let your feelings be known in order to try and stop it.

I agree with the previous comments that it is simply outrageous that anyone should have the sheer audacity to rename Penny Lane. Penny Lane has become synomenous with the Beatles and has surely superceded this James Penny. It should therefore remain as Penny Lane in honour of the Beatles, as it is well known to Beatles' fans (and everyone else) for the song Penny Lane. If Councillor Barbara Mace had not mentioned James Penny then clearly no one would have given it another thought. I urge Barbara Mace to forget about renaming it and keep the name Penny Lane for the sake of Beatles' fans every where. Forget the slave trade the name Penny Lane belongs with the Beatles' hit. Stop your silly political correctness. As the previous message states Barbara Mace should be pressing for changes as stated in the previous message.

I am outraged by this, who the hell does this woman think she is and does she really believe that changing the name of a street is going change any kind of racism,i dont think so,if anything it can make racism worse.Penny Lane has become famous because of the Beatles, nothing to do with slavery, ask anybody what does Penny Lane mean to them, they will all say The Beatles. It makes me wonder what these people do all day and get a large salary for digging up the past, the past is the past and that's where it belongs. We are or have alledgedly moved on,leave the names of our streets alone and Barbara Mace if you want to make racism a thing of the past try pushing for real justified sentencing where these crimes have been commited where it's black or white conserned a life is a life colour should'nt come into it and if you insist on delving into the past then approach our Royal Family and ask them to appologise or give some kind of compensation for their ancestors who beheaded many innosent victims to make themselves the wealth they aquired and still have today that also involved slavey but Barbara Mace i bet you wont touch it,so leave the past where it belongs and consentrate on doing something thats going to make people think twice about commiting crime, sorry changing names of streets is not good enough,i dont want to see changes in names of streets,i want to see you earn your salary by a fall in these sort of crimes, they should'nt happen in the first place, stop fobbing us off ,we're not stupid chasnging names of streets is not going to solve this problem.
