Penguins Happy At Kids' Baftas

by | 26 November 2007

Animated movie Happy Feet has been named best feature film at the Children's Bafta awards ahead of the latest Harry Potter film.

The eco-friendly musical shunned competition from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Flushed Away and Bridge to Terabithia.

However the dancing penguins were defeated by more established cartoon characters as the under-16s named The Simpsons as their favourite film of the year.

The Potter franchise was also unlucky in the inaugural computer games award, with the Xbox 360 version of the fifth film in the franchise defeated by Playstation 2 quiz game Buzz!: The Junior Party.

Crash of the Titans on the Nintendo Wii and Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga on the Nintendo DS were also nominated for the award.

CBeebies was named best channel while Barney Harwood, host of the now-cancelled Sunday morning show Smile, won the prize for best presenter.

The evening's special award was given to Mick Robertson, an award-winning producer who presented ITV children's show Magpie in the 1970s.

He said afterwards: "I am hugely proud to be receiving my Bafta award. My television career has been entirely spent in making programmes for children. There is no more important audience.

"All my programmes have been in the factual entertainment genre which is fast disappearing from children's screens because of its minority appeal."

Robertson added: "I hope ways will be found to support factual television for children in the future. They should always enjoy a rich and varied viewing choice."

Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman were named independent production company of the year, while That Summer Day, a BBC documentary detailing a child's experience of the July 7th terrorist bombing, won the factual category.
