Peel Honoured At Sony Awards

John Peel has been honoured with a special broadcasters' broadcaster award at the 25th anniversary of the Sony Radio Academy awards.

The legendary DJ passed away in 2004 and his wife Sheila picked up the posthumous award for his great work as an icon in British broadcasting.

Radio 2 had a great night at the ceremony, picking up five Sony Gold awards including two for Chris Evans.

Classic FM was judged to be the UK station of the year, beating both Radio 1 and Radio 2 to the gong.

The judges said of Classic FM: "Its back on top form, oozing enjoyment of the music thanks to imaginative use of celebrities not generally known for their love of classical music, and polished, approachable presentation."

Colin Murray picked up the prestigious music broadcaster of the year award, with judges impressed by his "fierce passion for music" along with his "blend of charisma and charm".

Radio 4's Today programme won the Gold award in the breakfast show category, among intense competition from Radio 1 and Radio 2 DJs.

Summing up the awards proceedings, Tim Blackmore, chairman of the awards committee, said the power of radio was "amply demonstrated" by the ceremony.

"Whatever platform was used to distribute their work, every one of our winners has demonstrated the kind of creativity, credibility, or objectivity that has come to exemplify a quarter century of 'the Sonys'," he said.

Celebrity guests handing out awards on the night included Dom Jolly, Amanda Holden, Greg Rusedski, Natasha Bedingfield, Sir David Frost and Carol Vorderman.

The awards were judged by over 100 industry professionals, including Davina McCall, Matthew Bannister and John Inverdale.
