Peacock Lays An Egg On Thursday

NBC, which got off to one of its best starts in years at the beginning of the week, had its feathers plucked ruthlessly on Thursday as it unveiled its much-promoted comedy lineup ahead of its competitors' fall premieres. Particularly disappointing was its Saturday Night Live Election Special which drew just 5.16 million viewers, down a whopping 69 percent from the comparable special four years ago when it featured Tina Fey's takeoff on Sarah Palin. Things only got worse. The season premiere of Up All Night attracted just 3.14 million viewers against a rerun of CBS's The Big Bang Theory, , which counted 9.20 million. The first episode of the final season of The Office pulled in just 4.32 million viewers -- representing 48 percent fewer viewers than those who tuned in to the comparable season opener of the show a year ago. (In fact it was the worst season debut ever for the NBC comedy series.) The season premier of Parks and Recreation followed with 3.52 million viewers. And the change-of-pace represented by Rock Center with Brian Williams at 10:00 could only draw 4.05 million viewers, despite airing opposite rerun competition. Fox was the clear winner of the night as The X Factor was up slightly from last week and Glee was down slightly. The network averaged 8.33 million viewers for the night, more than twice the number of viewers that NBC did on a night that it once dominated with a slate that it dubbed Must See TV.
