Paula Deen Fights Back
Celebrity Chef Paula Deen finally made her appearance on NBC's Today show on Wednesday after becoming a no-show last week when the scandal surrounding her admitted use of the N-word first broke. She told host Matt Lauer that she did so because I was just overwhelmed. I was in a state of shock. She maintained that she had used the verboten word just once, after she had been held at gunpoint by a black bank robber. It's just not a part of who we are. Since the scandal broke many of her supporters have pointed out that rappers use the word regularly in their music without anyone making a fuss. It's very distressing for me to go into my kitchens and hear what these young people are calling each other, she said. Finally, she looked tearfully at the camera and remarked, If there's anyone out there that has never said something that they wish they could take back -- if you're out there -- please pick up that stone and throw it so hard at my head that it kills me. ... I is what I is, and I'm not changing. Finally, she maintained that she had become the victim of someone evil out there that saw what I had worked for and they wanted it. Shortly after her appearance Caesars Entertainment and Walmart each announced that they have severed their association with Deen.
