Paul Weller's Improvised Album

Paul Weller made up most of the lyrics for his new album as he was recording it.

The musician enjoyed using a stream of consciousness to come up with the words to most of his tenth solo album, 'Wake Up the Nation', as it was a new approach to recording for him.

Weller has explained how the format of the LP started life as an idea from producer Simon Dine, which he then took and ran with.

He told radio station BBC 6 Music: "I didn't really sit down with a guitar and try to work them out or write beforehand. I would just spend a week or two weeks listening to them

"Instead of going in with a batch of lyrics, I didn't have anything at all. I'd just sit there and sing the first thing that would come into my head.

"It's nice after all these years to think there's still a method of working which you haven't done before."

Paul - who rose to fame in The Jam in 70s before moving onto The Style Council and eventually forging a solo career - also broadened his musical horizons to make the album.

He added: "There's a lot of folk stuff from the last few years - it's like finding another little universe there. People talk about Krautrock I know what they're talking about but I've never really heard any of it.

"So all the time I'm getting turned on in different ways to different music. I wanted to challenge people with the music but also to make people feel positive as well, it's an uplifting record."

'Wake Up the Nation' is released on Monday (19.04.10).
