Paul Mccartney Turns 70, Looks Ahead To London Olympics

Sir Paul McCartney celebrated his 70th birthday yesterday (June 18, 2012) in a low-key fashion, but 2012 is anything but a low-key year for the former Beatle. Not only did he close the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations earlier this month but he's also looking ahead to the London Olympics, where he will play a key part in the all-important opening ceremony.

What better way for one of the UK's most iconic musical figures to celebrate their 70th year than to perform in a ceremony that will be viewed by people all across the globe. Around a billion people are expected to tune in when the ceremony is broadcast on July 27 and the Washington Post has speculated that MACca will almost definitely be churning out some Beatles classics such as 'Eleanor Rigby,' 'Yesterday,' 'Let It Be' or 'Hey Jude.' When The Beatles first emerged as musical stars, they were considered pretty radical; anti-establishment, even. Now, he's playing for the Queen and country. And, indeed, the world.

In October last year, MCCartney married his third wife, Nancy Shevell. It marked an opportunity for the musician to finally close the messy chapter in his life that was his marriage to Heather Mills. His union with Mills did not end well and was plagued by court drama and tabloid interference. He continues to perform and release new material. 2012 has also seen him release the album 'Kisses on the Bottom,' a collection of jazz standards that he used to enjoy as a youngster, growing up in Liverpool.
