Patti Smith Pays Tribute To Late Playwright Jean Genet On Birthday
The Because the Night hitmaker showed up at the venue and played a 40-minute set in memory of the political activist on what would have been his 101st birthday on Monday (19Dec11).
Smith played the show for the second year running because she feels the Frenchman "wasn't appropriately acknowledged during his lifetime", reports Reuters.
In a video posted online, the singer is seen playing her guitar before shouting, "Happy birthday, Jean Genet!" to the crowd, who clapped as she ended her set.
Genet was born on 19 December, 1910 but died in 1986 after developing throat cancer.
Last year (10) Michael Stipe joined Smith at the museum to mark Genet's life.
