An opportunistic tourist passing by Bono's villa on France's Cote d'Azur realised he was less than familiar with the music blasting out of its open windows.
The fan grabbed his mobile and recorded the songs before posting the audio on video networking site YouTube. Four tracks were posted, including first single Sexy Boots.
No details of the new U2 album the first since How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb four years ago have yet been released. But Universal Music has registered the internet domain name No Line on the Horizon, suggesting this may be its title.
Other tracks are believed to be called For Your Love and Moment of Surrender, the Sun suggests.
Daniel Lanois, co-producer of the new record, told the Sun: "I think we can safely say it's one of the great, innovative records from U2. Bono's in great form, singing fantastic."
The video was quickly taken off YouTube by its copyright-conscious bosses.
