Parton's Reading Campaign Inspired By Childhood
Country superstar DOLLY PARTON's campaign to encourage children to read was inspired by her own disadvantaged childhood. The 61-year-old launched the pre-school literacy scheme in 45 U.S. states and is currently promoting it across the U.K. Parton felt her whole family suffered because of their illiteracy and hopes her dream of sending every child under five a free book each month will become a reality. She says, "My father was from a very large family and never had an opportunity to actually go to school. My father couldn't read or write as (couldn't) many of my relatives and I saw how crippling that can be. "When I got into a position to be able to do some charity work, some things, well the education seemed to keep just jumping out at me, and the children - how important it is to learn things when you're young."
