Paramount At Box-office Peak
For the first time in more than a decade, Paramount Pictures is ending the year as the box office champion. The strong showing of Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol , which took in $46.2 million over the Christmas holiday pushed Paramount's receipts over the top to $1.86 billion for the year (as of Dec. 25). That put it ahead of the usual winner, Warner Bros, whose total for the year reached $1.76 billion. In an interview with Bloomberg News, veteran box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian commented, "These are like two big behemoths duking it out, like Godzilla and King Kong, and they both generated a ton of money in a tough year." Sony finished in third place with $1.3 billion, just ahead of Disney with $1.2 billion. The highest-grossing movie of the year was Warner Bros.' Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 , which earned $381 million domestically. The No. 2 film was Paramount's Transformers Dark of the Moon , which grossed $352.4 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.
