Page Of Mozart Manuscript Sells For Record Amount
05 December 2007The leaf, one of two surviving pages of the legendary composer's draft for 1779's Sinfonia Concertante, was bought by an unidentified collector at auction house Sotherby's on Tuesday (04Dec07).
The page had not been seen in public for decades.
Sotherby's music specialist Dr. Simon Maguire says, "Its significance as the most important single leaf of Mozart to have appeared on the market for decades is reflected in the price it achieved.
"It is one of Mozart's greatest works, and we are thrilled to have handled a manuscript that takes us so close to its original inception."
The previous record for a page of manuscript was set in 1998, when a leaf with Mozart's notes for Rondo K.386 In A Major sold for $184,000 (GBP92,000).
