Award-winning poet Pablo Neruda's remains have been exhumed for further testing following new allegations he was fatally poisoned.
The Chilean Nobel laureate, who was a major supporter of socialist leader President Salvador Allende, was thought to have died from prostate cancer on 23 September, 1973, however his former driver, Manuel Araya, recently alleged dictator Augusto Pinochet, who won control of the country during a military coup two weeks before Neruda's death, ordered bosses to inject the writer with poison as he lay bedridden at a clinic in Santiago.
Last month (Mar13) a local judge approved a request to have Neruda's remains re-examined in a bid to prove or disprove the claims, and on Monday (08Apr13) forensic experts unearthed the 69 year old's casket, which was buried in the garden of his Isla Negra home, according to BBC News.
The star's nephew, Rodolfo Reyes, hopes the investigation will bring peace to the Neruda family, adding they want to know the truth "regardless of whether he died of natural causes or was murdered".
