Oz Still Wonderful; Wonderstone Isn't

There was no stopping that wonderful wizard in Oz The Great and Powerful at the box office over the weekend. After producing better-than-expected earnings during midweek that brought its first-week gross to more than $100 million by Thursday, the Disney film added an estimated $42.2 million to its total, bringing it to $145 million. By contrast, the only wonder that Warner Bros./New Line's Burt Wonderstone produced came from its falling well behind even the modest $15 million forecast for its opening. As it turned out the movie earned only about $10.3 million to place third, behind Oz and the thriller The Call, which debuted with $17.7 million, well above industry forecasts. Jack the Giant Slayer, another Warner Bros. disappointment, claimed fourth place with around $62 million. After three weekends it has taken in a meager $54 million. (It cost a reported $195 million to produce.) Rounding out the top five was the sixth week of Identity Thief with about $4.5 million. Produced for $35 million, it has now taken in $136.8 million.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo:
1. Oz the Great and Powerful, $42.22 million; 2. The Call, $17.10 million; 3. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, $10.31 million; 4. Jack the Giant Slayer, $6.22 million; 5. Identity Thief, $4.52 million; 6. Snitch, $3.50 million; 7. 21 and Over, $2.62 million; 8. Silver Linings Playbook, $2,59 million; 9. Safe Haven, $2.50 million; 10. Escape From Planet Earth, $2.33 million.
