Oscar-winning Idirector Seeks To End His Separation From Iran

Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who became the first filmmaker from his country to win an Oscar when his film A Separation received the best screenplay award at the 2012 Academy Awards, has completed his first film shot completely outside Iran, but he is seeking to hold the premiere in Tehran, the Tehran Times reported today (Monday). Farhadi has managed to skirt official censorship in his country by making deeply personal, character-driven films, and his latest film, titled The Past, appears to be no exception. Produced by France's Memento Films, the film concerns an Iranian man who deserts his French wife and two children and returns to Iran. When his wife asks for a divorce, he returns home to find her and his children living with another man. The fact that Farhadi decided to film his movie abroad raises the question of whether it may contain content that would have been censored had he made it in Iran. FilmIran, an Iranian film distributor, said over the weekend that it is seeking the necessary permissions from the Iranian Culture Ministry to release The Past.
