Oscar Winner Hansard Thanks Bono For Congratulation Textby Contributor | 26 February 2008
Oscar-winning singer Glen Hansard has revealed he received a congratulatory text from Bono after his surprise win at Sunday's ceremony.
Hansard, frontman of Irish band the Frames, won the Oscar for best original song with his partner Marketa Irglova for their track Falling Slowly, from the soundtrack of indie musical Once.
Hansard's triumph was a surprise for many critics, despite the critical acclaim surrounding Once, as Disney hit Enchanted was named in three of the five slots for their best original song category.
But while speaking to John Murray, a DJ on Irish radio station RTE, the Irishman revealed a text from the U2 lead singer capped an amazing evening.
"What was really amazing for me was getting texts from family and friends, it was amazing beforehand, and then I got a text from Bono and I was like 'Ah, my God, that's just amazing', he said.
"For me it was just like getting a text off the King of the Tribe."
Hansard and Irglova - both non-actors - play mismatched romantic leads in Once and became a real-life couple during the making of the film.
Though he has also starred in Alan Parker's The Commitments, Hansard said his role in Once is not the start of a long film career.
"We'll probably do a bit of a tour over here in America in the next couple of months," he explained.
"I'd like to think we'll play a few gigs in Ireland... but basically getting back to music. I mean, acting's not really my thing."
Once was released on DVD on Monday.
