Ender's Game Author Defends Gay Marriage Stance Ahead Of Film's Release

Orson Scott Card, the author of the popular children's sci-fi book series Ender's Game, has been force to defend his stance on gay marriage in the wake of the repealing of DOMA and with the movie adaption of his first Ender's book coming to cinema screens soon. The known opposer to same sex marriage gave a statement to Entertainment Weekly in which he described the issue as "moot," given that same sex marriage is now legal in the United States, adding that his own stance on the issue has nothing to do with the story.

"Ender’s Game is set more than a century in the future and has nothing to do with political issues that did not exist when the book was written in 1984," Card said in his statement. "With the recent Supreme Court ruling, the gay marriage issue becomes moot. The Full Faith and Credit clause of the Constitution will, sooner or later, give legal force in every state to any marriage contract recognized by any other state. Now it will be interesting to see whether the victorious proponents of gay marriage will show tolerance toward those who disagreed with them when the issue was still in dispute."

The statement was written in response to the recent threats from gay rights activists to boycott the film when it is released in cinemas later this year. Prior to this, in March 2013, the planned Adventures of Superman comic book for DC Comics by Card was dropped when artist Christopher Sprouse backed out of the project because of Orson's beliefs. In the past, Orson has written on his opposition towards same-sex marriage and in 2009 he joined the board of the National Organization for Marriage - an organisation that looks to prevent same sax unions. Geeks OUT - who are planning the boycott of the $110 million movie - board member Patrick Yacco recently said, “Hopefully, it will send a message that people who are actively vocal against the LGBT community don’t really have a place within the greater geek culture."

Ender's Game is expected to reach cinemas on October 25 2013.
