HAL DURHAM, the longtime announcer and general manager of country music mecca the Grand Ole Opry, has died, aged 77.
A Tennessee native, Durham first welcomed listeners to Opry time on radio in 1964, before becoming programme director, manager and Opry general manager from 1978 to 1993.
Under his supervision, the Opry inducted members such as Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss and Reba MCEntire.
Durham courted controversy by becoming the first general manager to allow full drum sets to be brought onto the Opry stage.
He died at his home in Florida over the weekend (28-29Mar09).
