Ono Supports Lennon School Sale

JOHN LENNON's widow YOKO ONO is facing a backlash from BEATLES fans after lending her support to the controversial sale of the singer's old art college. The avant garde artist/musician appeared at a recent fundraising bash in New York for Liverpool, England's John Moores University, which is using proceeds from the sale to fund a new design centre. A university spokeswoman confirms Ono was aware of the transaction and that Lennon's college is now earmarked for conversion into 28 apartments. She says, "Yoko was really thrilled and interested in the design academy." But Beatles fans are furious the historic building - where Lennon courted his first wife and fellow student CYNTHIA POWELL and met original Beatles bass player STUART SUTCLIFFE - could be lost forever. NICK STANLEY, director of Liverpool art organisation Annexe Inc, says, "It is surprising that Yoko is backing something that would see John's old school turned into flats." Lennon was eventually kicked out of the college after failing his exams.

Like my fellow Beatles' fans I too am furious, because it should remain a shrine to the Art College days of John Lennon and Stuart Sutcliffe. Further Beatles' history is the fact that the college was also attended by Bill Harry who started the paper Merseybeat, which first promoted the Beatles and all other merseybeat bands. So to sum up the Art College must be preserved as a homage to an important part of Beatle history.
