Online Critics Honour United 93by Contributor | 09 January 2007
United 93, the critically-acclaimed film of the one hijacked flight that failed to hit its target on September 11th, has been named as the best movie of 2006 by the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS).
The web-based award has further strengthened United 93's position as a forerunner for best film at the Oscars, to be hosted on February 25th.
Director Paul Greengrass' film was also named as the best film by the New York Film Critics Circle last month.
Helen Mirren picked up the award for best actress from the OFCS for her role as the United Kingdom's monarch in The Queen while the best actor prize went to Idi Amin for The Last King of Scotland.
Martin Scorsese was named as the top director of the year for his work on The Departed.
Oscar nominations will be announced on January 23rd; United 93 is likely to be up against films including Babel, The Departed, The Queen and Bobby for the best movie award.
Helen Mirren, meanwhile, could see some stiff competition from her fellow British actresses Judi Dench and Kate Winslet for their roles in Notes On A Scandal and Little Children, respectively.
