One Direction, the boy band that originally found fame on the X-Factor, have been voted the best UK/Ireland act at the MTV European Music Awards (EMAs). The band will now go on to compete for the best European Act, and from there (if they win) they qualify to be considered for the world's best act!

This year's awards, to be hosted by model and presenter Heidi Klum, are being held in Frankfurt, Germany, which is where they'll receive the award and also where they'll find out whether they have won the added prestige of Best European Act. The award is based on votes from fans, so Louis Tomlinson, one of the band members, expressed their gratitude reported by Entertainment Wise: “We're so happy and incredibly honoured to have won this. Once again our amazing fans have done us proud - thanks so much as always to you all!” He later Tweeted new about their new single, saying: “On the shoot today for our next single off the new album , Little Things :) happy days!”

It has been an extraordinary year for One Direction already, shooting to the top of the American charts and smashing records all over the shop, winning awards at the MTV EMAs will just be aother extraordinary accolade to add to that ever growing list. Other artists to be nominated for awards this year include Taylor Swift and Rihanna, who each have 6 nominations, plus Justin Bieber, Lady GaGa and Katy Perry who each have four. One Direction beat Justin Bieber at the VMAs earlier in October, and with them targeting exactly the same demographic, it looks like it will become a rivalry to stay.
