Oasis' Definitely Maybe Tops Best British Album Listby Contributor | 18 February 2008
Definitely Maybe, the debut album from Oasis, has been the voted the best British album of all time in a new poll.
Some 11,000 people cast their ballots in the survey for Q magazine and HMV, which also saw Oasis' sophomore release, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? named in second spot.
Radiohead's OK Computer and Revolver by the Beatles continued their lengthy battle - with the Oxford quintet having pipped the Fab Four to top spot in a number of polls - to finish in third and fourth place respectively while the Stone Roses' influential eponymous debut rounds out the top five.
The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band also made the top ten, finishing sixth, while Abbey Road, the White Album and Rubber Soul finished in 12th, 19th and 21st respectively.
While Oasis' two top-ten spots may not have been surprising, the relatively high placing of their albums Don't Believe the Truth and Be Here Now - at 14th and 21st respectively - is somewhat of a shock.
Though Pink Floyd had three albums inside the top 50, their fans' adoration is seemingly superseded by devotees of Keane, whose Under the Iron Sea - the only album from the last ten years to make the top ten - beat Dark Side of the Moon to eighth position.
Amy Winehouse's Back to Black, which finished 35th, made her the only female artist in the list.
Talking to the BBC, Q editor Paul Rees said Oasis' high finishes showed the Mancunians were "undoubtedly the nation's most-loved band".
He added: "In a list that features the likes of Radiohead's OK Computer and the Beatles' Revolver, this is a testament to the popularity of Oasis and their music."

1 Oasis: Definitely Maybe
