Oakenfold Spearheads Fundraising Song For Love Parade Victims
Dance DJs PAUL OAKENFOLD, PAUL VAN DYK and ARMIN VAN BUUREN have joined forces to pay a special musical tribute to those crushed to death at a recent German techno festival.
Twenty-one revellers at the Love Parade 2010 event in Duisburg on 24 July (10) died in an underpass crush between an overcrowded site and an alternative venue, while more than 500 others were taken to hospital with injuries.
Thousands of mourners turned out to remember the victims during an emotional ceremony in the city in July (10) and Pope Benedict XVI was among those who expressed their sorrow at the tragedy.
Now Oakenfold has teamed up with the two popular beatmakers to record the song Remember Love, which will be released on 11 September (10) under the name DJs United, to raise money for the victims' families.
Explaining the inspiration behind the track, Oakenfold says, "I just thought we should do something to help them.
"In many other music genres artists come together, so I wrote this song and contacted Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk. I think this is the first time this has ever been done in the dance scene - to give back, to help people."
A preliminary police report found organisers of the Love Parade had breached major security rules, which may have resulted in the deadly crush. This year's (10) festival has since been declared the last.
