Nirvana 'Heartbreak' Inspired Foo Fighters Says Grohl

Nirvana - The tragic suicide of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain inspired the band's drummer Dave Grohl to form Foo Fighters, reports the Seattle Times. The 42-year old says the "heartbreak" of Nirvana was partially healed when he started up his now acclaimed rock band.

Grohl and co released their seventh studio album 'Wasting Light' last week, which ended Adele's eleven week reign at the top of the UK charts. 5th April 2011 marked the 17th anniversary of Cobain's death and Grohl claims that the tragedy inspired him to form Foo Fighters, saying, "I remember reading an interview with Ian MacKaye, where he was talking about nostalgia and how unproductive it can be. It's the reason we started Foo Fighters. ... We started it to get away from the past. After Nirvana ended, it was the one thing healing us from the heartbreak of losing a friend and a band". The first six Foo Fighters records were nominated for Grammy Awards and the band have so far picked up three wins. A track on the new record contains the lyric, "I cannot forgive you, yet", which many Nirvana fans have taken as a reference to the late Cobain.

Grohl, who enlisted the help of Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic for 'Wasting Time', says he has modest ambitions for Foo Fighters, saying, "I'd love it if everyone knew one Foo Fighters song. Why the fu*k not?".
