Nick Cave - Nick Cave Worries Over Violence In Movies

Rocker-turned-screenwriter Nick Cave fears the high levels of violence in movies is to blame for real life atrocities such as the recent Colorado cinema massacre.
The Australian star fears many young people are negatively influenced by what they see on screen and claims America still harbours a "Wild West"-style gun culture which leads to incidents such as the killing of 12 people last month (Jul12) during a screening of the new Batman blockbuster.
Cave tells the Los Angeles Times, "If beautiful movies can influence you to go out and hug your children, then we have to be honest and say that other movies can inspire you to do bad things. To say they can't is to deny all movies their power... Guns are part of the American psyche, aren't they? This (the Colorado shooting) is collateral damage for having a Wild West mentality. It's intrinsic to the American psyche. It's never going to change."
Cave co-wrote the script for new gangster movie Lawless, but he insists the violence in the film is depicted responsibly.
He adds, "What we tried to do was show the consequences of the violence. Not every movie does that."
Twelve people were killed and 58 more injured when a gunman opened fire at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado on 20 July (12) during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.
